The ANML HEALTH TCHN 4 NEX (Laboratory Animal Veterinary Technician) position in the Office of Research, Campus Vet Services has been posted for recruitment.
Brief Description:
The position is one of several positions within Campus Veterinary Services, responsible to the Laboratory Animal Attending Veterinarian, responsible for clinical and research support to over 50 species of research and teaching animals covered by approximately 1400 animal care and use protocols at UC Davis.
Under direction, work independently with responsibility to the Attending Veterinarian, provide specialized veterinary, technical and research support services to principal investigators through Campus Veterinary Services (CVS). Routinely provide veterinary treatment to research and teaching colony animals and supports campus vivaria in Davis, Sacramento, and outlying areas in compliance with national and state regulations and standards to maintain Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC) accreditation. Provide specialized technical support to campus-wide research and teaching activities. Independently treat a diverse range of species (approximately 50) used for research and teaching on campus such as rodents, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) covered species including nonhuman primates, livestock, and other traditional and non-traditional laboratory animal species (birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, etc.). Administratively oversees the campus’ animal care and health practices, the screening of incoming animals, the campus’ diagnostic, and disease control practices to ensure overall compliance with animal welfare standards. Provide surgical and anesthetic support including induction, maintenance and recovery from anesthesia and post-operative monitoring in all species. Maintain administrative documentation of procedures consistent with internal policy, USDA, ILAR Guide and the Animal Welfare Act. Collect samples, initiate the prevention and treatment of a wide variety of diseases in laboratory animals, and provide training and oversight of students and volunteers. Act as a resource for investigators by providing a variety of rechargeable research support services, training, and consultations.

Brief Description:
Under the direction of the IACUC Assistant Director: Responsible for reviewing and working with investigators to refine highly complex research and teaching protocols and amendments to ensure consistency with federal and state laws, regulations, and university policies, as they pertain to the use of live vertebrate animals in research and teaching; conduct post approval monitoring primarily through record review. Participate in the IACUC Office on-call program. Share IACUC Office responsibilities including responding to public record requests, facilitating and/or participating on IACUC subcommittees and departmental work groups; drafting/editing/formatting policies and guidelines. Provide IACUC Office general function support including but not limited to assisting with Animal Tracking System (ATS) oversight, management of protocol expirations, annual renewals and personnel training reminder notifications. Assist with special projects as assigned. This is a hybrid position with the majority of work completed remotely and virtually. The incumbent will work independently with minimal supervision while prioritizing and following through with assigned responsibilities. The incumbent is expected to actively participate in scheduled Zoom or other virtual meetings.

About the Job
This position will serve as the main point of contact for all aquatic users at UC Merced. Aquatic duties will count towards 80% of the position and terrestrial duties will be 20% of the position. The technician will mainly be providing routine care and husbandry of aquatic species including zebrafish, lampreys, and cephalopods. Husbandry duties for both aquatic and terrestrial species include feeding, water exchanges, cleaning, and health monitoring. The technician will also provide support to the aquatic labs as needed. The incumbent will also work closely with staff and researchers to develop and modify standard operating procedures, and husbandry practices and incorporate new technologies which will promote the high-quality, cost-effective operation of the aquatic program. Interacting with faculty, staff, researchers, and other teams to provide high-quality, responsive animal care services is a must. The daily operations include maintaining accurate records including room logs, health reports, animal census, and other records involving both aquatic and terrestrial species as needed. Weekend and holiday work will be required, and will be on a rotational schedule. Our ideal candidate will have prior experience with aquatic animals and a basic understanding of system maintenance relating to aquaculture systems.
